Discover Kotka's Heritage: The Timeless Charm of Wooden Tour Engines
Step back in time and explore Kotka’s rich maritime heritage with our collection of traditional wooden tour engines (tuurimoottori). These iconic vessels have long been the lifeline for locals and visitors alike, ferrying passengers through the picturesque archipelago. Join us as we delve into the history and schedules of these beloved water buses, including the venerable M/S Tuula, offering scenic journeys from Katariina’s Sea Park to Langinkoski and around Kotkansaari from Sapokka during the summer months.
MeriSet
You can explore many beautiful archipelago destinations like Tammio and Ulko-Tammio with MeriSet’s water buses and cruises. MeriSet’s Vikla vessels offer a café onboard, where you can enjoy a variety of snacks and beverages. MeriSet operates from Sapokka in Kotka.
On Klippan to Varissaari
M/S Klippan shuttles passengers to Varissaari, just off the coast of Kotka, and back to Sapokka every hour. The brief 15-minute trip reveals Varissaari’s highlights: a restaurant boasting panoramic sea views, a nature walk revealing Svensksund fortress ruins, and a pavilion showcasing shipwrecks from the region’s significant naval battle in the late 18th century.
Ferry Service
The Finferries’ vessels Otava and Tekla provide regular connections between the islands off the coast of Kotka, including Kaunissaari in Pyhtää. These ferries serve several islands: Kuutsalo, Kirkonmaa, Haapasaari, Kaunissaari, and Rankki. Departures are from Kuusinen Harbor in Kotka, located at Juha Vainion street 95. During the summer season, except for Tuesdays, you can enjoy daily rides on the free ferry, while in winter, it operates a few times a week.
Please note that the ferry service primarily caters to residents and businesses on the islands, as stipulated by the Archipelago Law. While tourists are welcome on board, during peak seasons, the ferry may reach full capacity, and not all passengers may be accommodated. Hence, we recommend booking a paid trip to the archipelago during peak times.
Parking is available at Kuusinen Harbor, although spaces are limited. Alternatively, you can park at the P-area of Sapokka Passenger Harbor, which is located a short distance away.
