The Architect Brunch, featuring a variety of flavors, is designed to honor the everyday and festive spaces, as well as the joyful environments envisioned by Aino and Alvar Aalto. The brunch menu combines the culinary identity of Kymenlaakso with ingredients inspired by architecture and the famous architect couple’s travel stories. Italy served as a source of inspiration for the Aaltos, making Italian cuisine a cornerstone of the brunch. Another crucial theme is nature, woven together with the overarching design. The brunch includes items such as focaccia bread, marinated herring steaks with juniper berries, and blueberry-thyme panna cotta.
The Architect Brunch is co-created by Kat’s Cafe in Kotka, a lunch restaurant, bakery, and catering service provider. The brunch table is available on request and can be tailored to meet the customer’s needs, for example, as a dinner setting or by adding elements like an architecture lecture or discussion session to the dining experience.
Kantola was completed in 1937 as the residence for Lauri Kanto, the director of the Sunila pulp mill. The small village-like neighborhood of Sunila, situated amidst pine forests, along the seaside, and close to the factory, was also sketched on the drawing board of the Aaltos. Alvar Aalto visited Sunila for the first time in 1936 and immediately began planning the area’s zoning and residential buildings.
Today, the Kantola building is owned by Sunila Kantola Oy and serves as a venue for meetings, celebrations, accommodations, and various events such as concerts and training sessions.
