Located in the village of Ruotsinpyhtää in Loviisa, Strömfors Ironworks is one of the best preserved ironworks communities in Finland. The charming milieu offers its visitors an unforgettable glimpse into the rich history of the area. Widowed at a young age and a mother to two young children, the iron lady Virginia af Forselles developed the village for 30 years with a modern touch and a firm hand. In addition to the ironworks, sawmill and mill, the area also featured a brewery along with a distillery, a tavern and a brick factory.
Founded in 1695, the iron mill village has retained its unique atmosphere throughout the years. The people in the centuries-old environment continue to live in harmony with the old traditions by following in the footsteps of the local artisans, among other things. The lovely village offers visitors a wide variety of things to see and do. In addition to its unique atmosphere and past, Strömfors offers exciting moments in the present: the restaurants in the area keep visitors’ stomachs full, small boutiques have a plethora of mementos to choose from, and if you are feeling particularly energetic, you can rent sports and camping equipment and head out to enjoy the beautiful nature in the area.
At the Strömfors Ironworks Forge Museum, you can see how the historical ironworks was run, how blacksmiths used to work and which tools they used to make iron objects, such as nails or tools.
Strömfors Bed & Bistro’s spacious rooms offer visitors a relaxing place to stay all year round. The restaurant specializes on locally produced food and cooking with wild herbs. It is open every day during the summer season and by reservation during the winter.
